"RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY...

...come back another day when we're not scheduled to tour all the exterior sites of Florence".

Despite our rainy intro to Firenze, the city showed off its beauty...in unique ways. Rain drove away the usual throngs of tourists, so the city seemed more approachable. I first spent time in Florence (a whopping 2 hours) in the muggy heat of June, so a rainy Florence was a different attitude, full of visual surprises. I really enjoy getting the chance to see places, these incredible structures, in rain. Whereas most folks run and hide in caffes or museums, I stay out and see these details...

Marco took us on another twisting route through Florence past Dante's house, several tiny neighborhood churches, giant puddles, and of course, tempting shoe stores. Our route took us to the Arno to see the famous Ponte Vecchio.

We ended up at Santa Croce, famous for its seemingly uncountable tombs for famous names, including the likes of Michelangelo and Galileo. My inner architect was more excited about the tiny little afterthought of Santa Croce...the Pazzi Chapel. Attached to the side of the church, this separate chapel built for a wealthy family is Brunelleschi's perfect little Renaissance "rough draft". It's a symbol of Florence's entry into the Renaissance, and quite adorable (despite the obnoxious van parked in front of it).

I stayed behind the KState group to experience the highlight of my time in Florence: being completely and utterly alone in the Pazzi Chapel. Normally packed with architectural appreciators, the Pazzi Chapel is impossible to photograph because of its small scale. But being completely alone means I could lay down on the center of the floor and just stare up and appreciate in the most perfect silence.

Bellissimo.
